Ah, TikTok. The app took over the entire world during 2020 as people were left quarantined in their homes with nothing more than a couple screens to keep them occupied. Its hold over society remains prominent to this day as it is the fastest growing social media site in 2021 so far. When truly thinking about it, having a popularity that grand should bring more opportunities stretching past just entertainment purposes, right?

The video sharing company realized this and has now tapped into the world of recruitment and human resources through the launch of their new initiative, TikTok Resumes. This pilot program was tested from July 7th to July 31st with the assistance of international brands such as Target, Chipotle, Forever 21, and many more who volunteered to place some of their job applications on the site.

65 million members of Gen Z account for more than 20% of the U.S. population but are expected to make up as much as 30% of the workforce by the year 2030, according to government data. Considering Gen Z and Millennials have the majority presence on TikTok and with the current labor shortage affecting retail stores and restaurants, this pilot program could lead to a wonderfully discovered technique to get people back out into the workforce.

Applicants apply through the #TikTokResumes (currently at 290.3 million views) and tiktokresumes.com where they include their LinkedIn profiles and contact information. Emails and personal websites are also placed in candidates’ biographies on their accounts so companies have extra ways of reaching them for interviewing purposes. Although the trial period ending has temporarily stopped the service, the TikTok Resumes website and hashtag provides information on the different jobs available, resume tips, and video resume examples to help better prepare anyone looking to use this form of application.

Employers that are willing to use this form of hiring from TikTok can also boost customer attraction and their skills in content creation. Employee interviews and trendy clips showing off the workplace builds interest for potential candidates to move towards starting an application. As we inch further into the future we must embody the digital age and how helpful it can be for not only people, but also businesses.

It will only be a matter of time before large competitor sites like LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Snapchat try and dip their hands into the video resume wave, so will this become the new norm?
